Greetings, Talebones Readers!
This is an unusual housekeeping post this week, but I wanted to send it out like this so that as many of my readers as possible would see it.
In light of the recent events of the flooding in Texas, including the horrific damage at Camp Mystic and the children and counselors who have been killed or are still missing, it feels really inappropriate for me to write and publish a story in which kids and staff at a summer camp are put in peril—even if my intentions as a storyteller are positive. While I understand that I can’t be aware of every tragedy enough to work around it, this one feels especially poignant for me and so many others right now.
I’ve built enough wiggle-room into the outline for Ivy On The Trail that I’ve decided to postpone this upcoming episode to next week, July 18th, to give some space for awareness of the real-life situation currently going on.
If you’d like to help and support the ongoing rescue efforts in Texas, please do check out this resource put together by the local NPR station in the area.
I didn’t make this decision lightly. I don’t imagine I’ll need to postpone any later than next week, but I’d like to leave the door open for the spirit to move me, as it were. This is a highly unusual and awful situation and I feel it’s important to be sensitive to it.
Fiction does heal, but care and compassion come first, always.
Ivy’s tale will continue soon. Until then, you can explore:
The newest issue of Talestack News, a twice-monthly bulletin of Substack fiction
My available and ready-to-read Ferris Island Tales
Tales set in Other Places (some of which will be published in book-form soon, so take a look while they’re still free to read!)
Opportunities to Work With Me as an editor
And stay tuned for a potential new piece of short fiction soon!
Thank you for understanding, and I hope this week treats you well.
Your grateful storyteller,
NOTE: While I've fixed it in the app, please be advised that the email version has the wrong date. The next serial post has been postponed to JULY 18TH.
Thank you!
Thank you for being open with your thought process here. It helps others think through how they would handle similar current events that may unfortunately align with their content.
