I guess any kind of monster within is the most terrifying for me - like Kate Chopin’s The Yellow Wallpaper. And the monster in Frankenstein is this kind of doubling figure as well, and of course Mr Hyde. Yikes.

Since I was little I have had a love affair with the story of a phoenix. Mythical birds that can burn themselves to ash and regenerate. It's a deep flesh kind of love for me. JK Rowling's version of a phoenix really hit a tender spot for me at the time in my life; so my visions of phoenix have been altered to include magical healing powers for others as well as self. I even sport a six feather phoenix tattoo on my body- it's in a hidden space where only loved ones can see it. Again, the sacredness of this bird to me is symbolic of something deeper.

I second this! I love the symbolism Phoenix! Them burning to ash to regenerate has been something I’ve always lived my life by. Knowing that through the trials of life I too, can regenerate, start over, change the course of my life. Such a beautiful analogy. ❤️ I love that you have a Phoenix tattoo!

I’ve mentioned this before in a previous comment thread, but absolutely nothing creeps me out more than the version of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel. But I haven’t read Frankenstein yet.

The puppeteers from Ringworld...

Strange 3 legged two headed creatures known for being cowards but not actually, they are just misunderstood.

I’d go with Dracula, but Lovecraft has some pretty creepy creatures also.

If it's a film, Morph from Treasure Planet. If it's a book or series... the badgers from Redwall. Cregga Rose Eyes, Boar the Fighter... good times.

In the Homeworld computer game franchise, there are these relics floating through space from a race known as the “progenitors”--they are extinct, and their ruins demonstrate they were highly advanced. I LOVE that concept and have stolen it and merged it with another idea and it lurks in the distance in my headcanon for my own writing. I like the mystery and mild fear if not knowing if theybare actually gone, or if you will accidentally find them one day.

I love Homeworld! I just wish they update the game to 64-but architecture so that I could play it again. I own all of the games, but can’t play them on my current computer 😭.

I recently read Timothy Zahn’s novel Manta’s Gift. The creatures in that story aren’t creepy, but they are fascinating! They’re giant manta-ray-like creatures that fly through the skies of Jupiter. It’s a crazy weird book, but I really enjoyed it. The idea of continuous flight was really appealing to me.

That reminds me! In Kenneth Oppel’s book Airborn, he describes a flying creature that sounds cat-like in many ways, but has wings like a bat. These creatures literally spend their entire lives in the air. The mothers give birth to their young in mid-flight and the baby’s wings unfold and catch the wind as they fall. Pretty crazy!
