Dear Reader…
Welcome back to The Weekly!
For those who are new: this little digest is where I make sure we’re all on the same page about what’s going on in Talebones-land! In this issue, I’ve got a round-up of April’s posts and a glimpse into what’s coming up ahead of our First Anniversary in June!
Ready? Let’s go!
April Round-Up!
In case you missed it…
Birdmint Julep - the brief chronicle of a chef’s obsession with a strange herb and its bizarre implications
The Eye of God - a wealthy widow gives a quarter to a pauper and receives a fearful prophecy in return
Passerine - a ferry captain faces a supernatural force when he pilots an antique boat for the final time
NEW Limited Serial! This past weekend I posted the first part of a stand-alone limited serial set on Ferris Island, projected to be about 2-3 parts long. It doesn’t have an over-arching title yet, but look out for the next part sometime this week!
The New Kid - Jake Masoe wants nothing more than to be invisible in his new school, to put the events of the previous year behind him. But when you move to a small town on a haunted island, someone…or something…is always bound to take notice of you.
TALESTACK NEWS is a twice-monthly bulletin of Substack fiction news where I collate as many announcements, projects, submissions opportunities, community endeavors, and generally cool things as I can gather. Check out the most recent issue here! (And if you’re a writer on the platform, check out the submission guidelines and email your news to talestack.editor@gmail.com by May 19th to be included in the next issue!)
Coming Up…
May is kind of an auspicious month around here! This time last year, I was poking and prodding at a private newsletter that would become Talebones, excited and nervous about what sharing my fiction could bring…and what a year it’s been!
As we prepare for the First Anniversary of Talebones at the start of June, I’ve been polishing up the site a little bit, finally solidifying some projects I’ve been promising, and looking for ways to celebrate.
Some things I want to highlight:
Check out the newly-improved FERRIS ISLAND landing page for all of the tales in one (hopefully) coherent place! As the collection of stories expands, I’m always looking for better ways to organize everything. Let me know what you think!
Our winter serial, Freelance and Fishmaids, was such a fan favorite that we decided to add a second season! The continuation of the story is currently in planning stages and is intended to run from June 7th through August 23rd. If you haven’t read Season One of Freelance and Fishmaids, catch up HERE before the next season drops!
Thank you for reading!
I have to admit, I’ve been feeling pretty emotional about coming up on the first anniversary of Talebones. A LOT has happened in a year, and it’s wild to think back on how I started versus how it’s going.
I know I’m a broken record, but there’s truly nothing else to say: without YOU, every single reader who took a chance on this newsletter—whether back at the beginning or at any step along the way—I would not be where I am a year later. Thank you, all of you, for your attention, your comments, your love, your evangelizing, your messages, your care.
There was a time when I nearly gave up on anyone ever reading my fiction. I’m so very glad I didn’t. I wish I could go back and give that past version of me a hug.
I would say: Girl, just keep writing. You have no idea how good it’s going to get.
Thank you for letting me tell my stories.
Love to all, and blessings!
Your grateful storyteller,
Look at that growing Ferris Island library, wow. 👏🌟
More F and F!! Hurrah!
