I've sometimes wondered how long you can maintain Ferris Island stories, but then I remember there are tiny little fictional towns that have a murder a week, with 100 percent solved and a 100 percent conviction rate, plus the population size doesn't decrease, despite the regular loss of lives. So yes, you can go on forever.
I still wonder why you describe your fiction as speculative, rather than magical realism?
You know, it’s funny you say that, because I was discussing with someone just the other day about what magical realism is and came to the conclusion that I have no idea anymore. 😂
I’m not opposed to calling my stories magical realism, and I think some of them might be more than others. But I think I get hung up on what I consider to be classics of the genre, where a strange thing happens in the narrative and goes largely unremarked-upon. It’s not part of the “world” of the story, but happens outside of it. I think of magical realism as a little more surrealist in that way, maybe?
But hey, honestly, genres are so fuzzy these days I don’t mind either way. As long as folks are enjoying them. ❤
Speculative usually indicates realism with elements that could potentially come to fruition someday. Thus why a lot of sci-fi and horror is speculative fiction.
Magical realism is self descriptive, based in the known world with magical elements.
Maybe Substack's stubborn refusal to provide fiction categories is because writers will never be satisfied with the core publishing categories.
Thank you so much for the mention 🧡 looking forward to giving this a watch!
I missed jumping in on the live of this but WOW this was fun to watch!!
