One thing I love about Ferris Island stories is how often redemption is genuinely offered. It's not always received, and when comeuppance arrives it always feels deserved -- but in a way it feels deserved specifically because the character clearly understood their wrongs and chose the wrong path anyway. It feels that much more grounded and satisfying, as opposed to someone who doesn't see what they did wrong or doesn't believe it was "that bad" just getting merc'd by some horror in the dark. Justice instead of blind revenge, I guess.
All of which is to say: I love this story, it's horrifying in the best way. Also shoutout to the Not Deer, my favorite scary cryptids. <3
This is very unnerving. we hope for some RIGHTEOUS justice on the pathetic hunter. I would have cracked and spelled out some awful demise but well done for the subtlety!
I was reading this on my phone, and after the story, I realized a sharp imprint of the phone in my fingers and palm. I hadn’t noticed how tightly I was gripping it. This is truly a gripping story. I was pulled in from the opening line! Great work!
Outstanding writing, dragging the reader this way and that … the metaphor, superb … redemption snatched away from the undeserving. Creepy but not the usual Halloween fayre. Excellent work, Sally.
A great little package of suspense and terror! I loved the pin pricks at our anxiety and curiosity that you used progressively thru the story. First the "Not his blood. It was hers." and then the repeats of "It sounded like…"! Knowing he has done something terrible and feeling some form of vengeance stalking him with his own self indictment of "stupid"! Nicely done!!
Bone-chilling and beautiful. Really happy to have played some role, however small, in bringing this about. If bone-stags are now on the table in ferris island lore……. A terrifying thought!!!

Wow. Love the creepy suspense and horror but also the depth to his sins and pleas for forgiveness. Great work.
I'm late to this story but oh man. *Oh man*.
This was brilliant.

Great story. Not a fan of hunting so I’m on the side of the bone stag!
That was a great, atmospheric story. Thank you.
Also, I’m guessing 2002 for the year!
Ding-ding-ding!! 🎉😂
This was such a beautifully written, well-rounded tale! I definitely shouldn’t have read it in the dark, though. 😅
