As SE Reid's husband I wanna give her a shout out for the time and effort I know she put into the research for this story. Soooooo much work! And I also have to make it clear that she wrote this long before "The Green Book" movie dropped.
Oh my... Somehow I missed this jewel until now! It had me reading in the dark just after midnight, with tingles all over until the family was finally safe out of town...thank you!
Given the supernatural angle and featuring the Green Book my mind jumped to Lovecraft Country (not the movie) but it made another turn, subtle, and I quite liked it. Also, "Tischlein Deck Dich" (Wishing-Table, Grimm) springs to mind. The story provides a good build-up and suspense, and the resolution is unexpected. A fun read!
Happily working my way through Sally’s back catalogue, this is marvellous. It really is. I was totally immersed. And because I’m clearly living under a rock I had no idea there was a movie called ‘the green book’. Not that I’d probably have watched it because i really don’t enjoy being reminded about how low humans can sink.
This tale, to me, perfectly sums up the importance of short stories. The research you did shines through it too. 🔥

♥️
Wow, I really enjoyed reading it...simple, well-crafted prose, this!
And TIL “psychopomp”—even more interesting because I’m currently writing a novel that features yamadūtas, the Hindu emissaries of Death.
Excellent story. I loved everything about it.
Thank you, Ben! I appreciate the sweet comment and the restack, and thanks for reading! ✨

I’m also working my way back through and have loved unwrapping each of these gems, and realizing the connections woven throughout. I am hooked!
