This was great. I haven't read a lot of fiction yet on Substack, but this encourages me to read more - epsecially yours. I really enjoyed the way the tension built up after the introduction of the first racoon and how our sympathy is divided.
That was a delightful story - raccoons as guardians...that is something I can get behind.
Interestingly...I viewed the raccoons in this story as a positive - it reminded me of camping near San Luis Obispo and waking up in my tent from a sort of gnawing sound - I gave the tent a quick punch, which landed on something...and I could feel the mystery guest running away. The entire gang arrived shortly after that, and raccoons surrounded my tent. It was unnerving, but I think they were only trying to scare me - nothing happened, but I did gain a new respect for these little masked marauders.

I imagine Ricky's head is now stuffed in the car like the grotesque head in the "Silence of the Lambs" storage garage.
I have also made a super-scholarly determination that this story is full-on "Pacific Mist Noir" because of the use of the words "frosted", "misty", and "moss."
I love raccoons but NOT ANYMORE!
🤣🤣

Trash panda's.....more like Assassin Panda's.
I like raccoons, but I think I will stay away from them now.
Just incredible, S.E. I was hooked from beginning to end.

And that's why you don't mess with a fella's car.
Loved it 🦝

Hurrah for the raccoons I say. Quite a harsh punishment for attempted grand larceny though 🤩
If you've never seen it before, I invite you to watch the movie Willard. I suspect you'll enjoy it. 😁
Another fantastic story, Sally, you've been on a roll!
This is a TERRIFIC tale! I knew what was coming, but still… Wonderful story, excellently written!!!
Raccoon zombies. 😂
Shivery!
I loved this! Great pacing and tension. Was rooting for the raccoon! 🤣
Should I send this to my friend who, two years ago, had convinced me that raccoons are objectively cute and DEFINITELY not pests 😆
Serves him right for trying to take advantage of a sweet old lady!
